Tipping Your African Safari Guide

Although it is entirely up to you, it is common in Africa to tip safari guides. Many individuals seek for tipping rules because it is a sensitive and complex matter. This is our recommendation.

  • Transfer drivers: USD 10 – 20 per transfer
  • Lodge guides: USD 10 – 20 per couple per day
  • Trackers: USD 5 – 10 per couple per day
  • Driver and tracker: USD 20 – 30 per couple per day (give the tip to the driver who will then split it)
  • Lodge staff: Guests are asked to use the staff tipping box, which is shared amongst all lodge employees. About USD 10 per person daily is customary. You may also tip specific staff via the camp manager.
  • Butlers (if applicable): USD 5 – 15 per day

What Makes Our Safari Guides Great and Why They Matter

  1. They Know the Facts: Exceptional guides share vast knowledge about wildlife, nature, and culture, keeping guests informed and inspired throughout the safari.
  2. They Relate to People: Great guides read their guests, adapting to energy levels, moods, and interests to personalize every experience.
  3. They’re Great Conversationalists: Skilled guides make every moment engaging — from morning drives to dinner conversations.
  4. They Keep You Safe: Pro guides understand animal behavior, ensuring safety during drives and walks in the wild.
  5. They Make It Fun — Even Without Big Sightings: When wildlife hides, they reveal nature’s smaller wonders — from termites to chameleons.
  6. They Manage Expectations: Instead of promising sightings, they let nature surprise you, turning every moment into discovery.
  7. They Inspire Children: Great with kids, they make safaris fun through stories, questions, and playful learning.
